Launching The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics

Vinay Kumar, President, ASIP and Mark E. Sobel, President, AMP

The American Society of Investigative Pathology (ASIP) and the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) are proud and excited to announce the launch of a new journal, The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics.

These are heady times for pathology as a science and a medical discipline. Just as the discovery of genes and molecules is having a profound impact on the understanding of disease pathogenesis, at the same time molecular analyses of cells and tissues are applied ever more frequently to render diagnosis, to assess prognosis, and to suggest therapy. The American Journal of Pathology will continue to publish papers relating to molecular pathogenesis, whereas The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics will report discoveries of molecular defects relevant to disease diagnosis and prognosis and the translation of these findings to the clinical diagnostic setting. Quite appropriately, therefore, The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics will carry the subtitle "Part B of The American Journal of Pathology."

ASIP and AMP have the common goals of promoting research and education in pathology. Indeed, there is considerable crossover in our memberships. In keeping with these relationships, The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics will be a joint venture of the two societies both intellectually and financially. This journal will therefore benefit from the unique and complementary strengths of the members of ASIP and AMP.

In recognition of the excellence of The American Journal of Pathology and with the intent that The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics will attain a similar stature, Dr. Nelson Fausto, the current Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Pathology, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the new journal as well. This arrangement will also allow The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics to take advantage of the excellent managing staff currently in place for The American Journal of Pathology.

Although the Editor-in-Chief will provide considerable leadership in focus and content, The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics will need its own Senior Editor to spearhead efforts to develop this publication into the leading journal of molecular diagnostics.

Therefore, a national search for a Senior Editor for The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics has been initiated. The search committee is chaired by Editor-in-Chief Nelson Fausto and its members come from the leadership of AMP and ASIP. An advertisement of this position appears elsewhere in this issue. We intend to complete the search for Senior Editor by late spring and to publish the first issue of The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics in November 1999. In addition to original articles, the inaugural issue will also carry the abstracts of papers to be presented at the annual meeting of AMP. Initially, the new journal will be published four times a year and will be mailed to members of ASIP and AMP. In addition, all paid subscribers of The American Journal of Pathology will also receive The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics.

Publication of The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics is an expression of the shared vision of ASIP and AMP. We hope that in addition to providing a medium for publication of the best research in diagnostic molecular pathology, this joint venture will further cement the intellectual ties between the members of the two societies and will ultimately increase the vigor of academic pathology.
